People who are considering a move to the Denver area often ask us to describe how big of city/metro area we have. Well, here are the most current numbers:

The Denver metro area has gained 101,731 residents since the 2010 Census, according to new Census Bureau estimates Thursday. The Denver-Aurora-Lakewood area, not including Boulder County, had an estimated 2,645,209 residents in 2012, up from the 2010 count of 2,543,478…

Here is a map that shows the metro area, with a mileage scale to give you an idea of the geographic size of this area:

To put this in context, this report also notes that there are 52 U.S. metro areas with at least 1,000,000 residents. Here are the top 5:

  • New York, 19.8M
  • Los Angeles, 13M
  • Chicago, 9.5M
  • Dallas-Fort Worth, 6.7M
  • Houston, 6.1M

The five cities with the closest population numbers to Denver are St. Louis, Baltimore, Charlotte and Pittsburgh.
